To: Cecil Nielsen , Jennifer Berry < president at marinbees.org> Cc: Robert MacKimmie , Bonnie Morse < bonnie at bonniebeecompany.com> Hi Cecil, It sounds like you are concerned that we are treating Bonnie unfairly, and for transparency I've cc'd her on this email thread. I've not taken Robert off the cc, so he is also included here. I want to assure you that myself and the board take fairness and transparency very seriously. Bonnie?s posts are moderated according to the Education Policy, which we've posted on the Buzz, in our most recent newsletter, and the website. I've attached is again for your reference. This policy applies equally to all members, and its purpose is to ensure that educational content shared via the listserv aligns with our club?s mission, maintains neutrality, and prevents the list from being used for commercial purposes. While I approve Bonnie's posts as quickly as possible, they are moderated as part of the policy?this is not a punitive action. In this case, Jennifer Radke's posts are also held for moderation, along with others who post classes and workshops. In the interest of transparency, I?d also like to kindly ask that any further concerns regarding the moderation process or policy be directed to me formally. I?ve noticed that there have been some concerns expressed through informal channels, and I want to ensure that we?re maintaining open, direct communication in a way that serves our community rather than dividing it. If you, or anyone else, feels that further discussion is needed about the policy, I?m happy to facilitate an open forum to ensure everyone?s voice is heard. They do *not* support an open, multiple-bid system, citing concerns about competition between members and the difficulty of tracking outcomes (since homeowners may not hire someone until weeks or months after initial contact). - *Claire* was more in favor of a multiple-bid/open model, highlighting homeowner choice, inclusivity for new members, and reduced need for list moderation. She offered several ideas for improving the Swarm List overall and emphasized a contractor?s mindset?prioritizing accessibility and equity, especially for nonprofits and low-income clients. - *My current concern:* While I was initially aligned with Claire?s model, I?m now questioning whether a free-for-all bidding structure would foster unhealthy competition and tension within the club. We need to balance fairness, homeowner choice, and community harmony. Individual Notes: - *David Carlos* comes across as calm, generous, and collaborative. He?s solution-oriented, particularly around improving the structure of the Swarm List, and seems focused on mentoring and service. - *Claire* is clearly skilled and community-minded. She offers discounted work to nonprofits and low-income clients and brings fresh ideas, but approaches the club from an ?outsider/contractor? perspective. She emphasized systems that empower homeowners and reduce gatekeeping. - *JM* said several things that raised red flags for me. While he expressed passion for bees and a willingness to work for free, his brashness, tone, and ego-centered language undermined my trust. Claire reports that when she tried to chat with him, he became uncooperative after learning she was new and lived outside the county. Additionally, *Jed, you shared that JM inspected your hives without permission*?a serious breach that I believe you should address with him directly. Current Status: - JM has *offered* to apologize to Claire publicly. If he follows through promptly, that may help de-escalate things. If he does *not*, I believe we need to consider formal moderation or temporary removal from the Swarm List, especially since this situation has created significant disruption and other members are now calling on us to take action. ------------------------------ Let me know your thoughts?especially around: - Whether we should move forward with a multiple-bid extraction system or consider a hybrid model - Expectations we want to set around respectful communication and trust - Any action we want to take if JM doesn?t issue a public apology soon Thanks Everyone, Jennifer -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This means that if another hosting client generates email that causes the major mail services (Google, Yahoo) to start throttling our shared mail service, we'll be throttled as well. - we're dependent on list members configuring their email clients so all swarms list email is delivered in a timely and orderly fashion. Some email clients (Apple's Mail.app) allow users to organize or categorize received email which can hide the notification email that the swarm has been "claimed". - swarms need to be responded to quickly (the swarm may have moved on during the two hour waiting period); extractions don't (the home owner needs to be informed that help has been summoned, but the scheduled work - time and cost - can be negotiated). We're investigating CRM (customer relationship management) systems that would support a more managed service. I suggest we use something that supports text message notification, but requires interaction with the web site to manage the swarm allocation. The web site would have up-to-date details on the status of the swarm report: - has the home owner/swarm reporter been contacted, - has it been determined if these are bees or yellow-jackets, - is it a swarm or an extraction, - has the swarm/extraction been allocated to a responder The web site would manage two lists - an extractions list, and a swarms list. They would be independently managed, but one could be a member of both lists. The extractions list would contain those that offer a service and potentially charge for it. It would be quite appropriate for the home owner/swarm reporter to receive calls from multiple extractors offering their services and to negotiate with one (or more) to do the extraction. The initial swarm report would generate text messages to be sent to members of both lists. Upon receiving a text message notification that a swarm has been reported, those interested would login in to the web site and indicate their interest in handling the swarm/extraction. The first to do so would be instructed to contact the swarm reporter to determine the swarm characteristics. It is desirable that the initial contact be made by someone who can determine if the report concerns a swarm of honeybees, an extraction, or something else. This would most likely be someone on the extraction list, but it needn't be. Once the determination is made, the web site swarm report status is updated. If the swarm had been characterized as an "extraction", anyone that indicated they were interested in the swarm and are on the extraction list would receive a text message indicating this characterization and should feel free to contact the swarm reporter to offer their services. The extractors (or a subset thereof) may choose their own policy and schedule jobs as they see fit. Once the negotiations are complete, the swarm status is updated on the web site. If the swarm is characterized as a "swarm", it would be "auctioned" off to those who expressed interest and are on the swarms list. The web site would keep track of who on the swarms list had responded to prior swarms, and award the swarm to the one who expressed interest in the swarm and had the longest time since they'ed received a prior swarm allocation. They would receive a text message notifying them of this determination and would update the swarm status on the web site indicating they have accepted the allocation. This requires we maintain member login credentials for the web site. That would help deal with other issues - managing mailing list membership, tracking resource usage (club equipment), ... This can be discussed and fine-tuned as appropriate (how do we handle the case where someone expressed interest but for one reason or another, cannot handle the swarm once it has been allocated to them). We should also contact other groups and determine how they manage their swarm reports. Perhaps we could develop something that would be useful to other groups. > On Jul 18, 2025, at 9:20 AM, Jennifer Berry wrote: > > Also, I forgot to include: > Jim suggested we separate the swarm list from extractions. Unfortunately, as a 501c3 nonprofit, our mission and bylaws require us to use club funds specifically in support of beekeeping programs. The Log Cabin could write a grant with report back and financial oversight, but rules keep us from just writing a check to help out. I have an idea, but before I share it, let me stress that you all need to *send me and Malcolm your budgets for the 2025-2026 fiscal year*. We need to know how we are doing financially before we can allocate any funds for outside projects. Then, we can offer to increase our yearly rent for the Log Cabin. They've been generous to offer us a discounted rate, and we can renegotiate our lease to support them. I personally don't love the Log Cabin because it's too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer, and the music is too loud, but it's the best we have until we find something better. We need to hear from our membership whether or not folks want to use their dues support the Log Cabin, so I move we send this out as a general vote item. I reached out to Sue Grant-Marsh who handles our lease agreement to see how much discount they give us. With that and your budgets, we'll have a better idea of how much we can offer. What do you all think of this idea? Can you think of other ways to do this?
